Nebulisation and equine asthma management

Equine asthma is a common respiratory condition that can affect both health and performance. BreathEazy, a leading provider of respiratory technology, offers a range of resources to support vets and owners in the management of affected horses.

Nebulisation in the management of respiratory disease

Nebulisation is an effective method of delivering prescribed medication directly to the lungs and lower airways, particularly in equine practice where it plays an important role in the management of equine asthma.
With 14% of UK horses affected by a severe form of the disease1, and even more exhibiting milder signs, nebulisation has become an essential component of respiratory care in horses. Nebulisers, such as the Flexineb®, may also be used for routine airway maintenance therapy, helping to manage affected horses between flare-ups and to minimise the impact of respiratory issues on performance.

Optimising equine respiratory health through routine nebulisation

Horses are uniquely limited when it comes to their respiratory health. As obligate nasal breathers, they are unable to reduce airflow resistance through mouth-breathing. Even small reductions in respiratory efficiency can impair performance and recovery.
During high-intensity exercise, when oxygen demand is high, virtually all horses experience hypoxaemia (reduced blood oxygen levels) and hypercapnia (elevated carbon dioxide levels).2 Maintaining optimal lung function is therefore essential not only for achieving peak athletic performance in competition horses, but also for supporting general health and welfare in all equines.
